Late Surge Leads Aggies to 12-6 Win over Alabama

The Maroon & White trailed 6-4 going to the bottom of the sixth, where the Aggies put up a run on Cole Bedford‘s solo home run. They reclaimed the lead with two runs in the seventh and blew the game open with a five spot in the eighth.

Bedford had a monster day at the plate, going 4-for-5 with two doubles, one home run, two runs and five RBI. The junior catcher also gunned down an Alabama base stealer in the top of the first. Braden Shewmake batted 3-for-5 with one run, one double and two RBI. George Janca and Cam Blake added two hits apiece.

Aggie starter John Doxakis labored with the zone through 5.0 innings and two batters in the sixth. He yielded five runs, three earned, on five hits and three walks while striking out four. Cason Sherrod (3-1) earned the win in relief with 0.2 innings of work, getting out of a seventh-inning jam with a strikeout and a grounder to third. Nolan Hoffman earned his sixth save of the year, scattering three hits while striking out two in 2.0 innings.

Texas A&M improved to 25-9 overall and 6-7 in the SEC. Alabama dropped to 21-14 overall and 5-8 in league action.

SCORING SUMMARY

T3 | Alabama got a leadoff double by Keith Holcombe and he moved to third on a sacrifice bunt by Jett Manning. After Holcombe scored on a groundout to short by Matt Malkin, the Crimson Tide loaded the bases with two walks sandwiched around an error by Aggie third baseman Janca on a sky ball over the pitcher’s mound. Hunter Alexander made the Maroon & White pay for the miscue, threading a 2-1 offering through the left side of the infield for a two-run single. UA 3, A&M 0.

B3 | Blake sent a frozen rope to rightfield for a leadoff single and was replaced at first by Michael Helman who hit a fielder’s choice grounder to short. Logan Foster followed with a 392-foot shot over the fence in left-center for his seventh home run of the season. UA 3, A&M 2.

B4 | The Aggies claimed their first lead with two runs in the fourth. Bedford hit a ground-rule double that hopped the short fence down the rightfield line to start the frame. After Zach DeLoach lined out on a laser to second base, Bedford moved to third on a wild pitch. With the infield drawn in, Janca hit a sky ball into the expanded no man’s land in centerfield for a double, knocking in Bedford. Janca moved to third on a grounder to short by Blake and came around to score when Helman pushed a perfect bunt down the third base line. A&M 4, UA 3.

T6 | The Crimson Tide regained the lead with a three-run frame. Chandler Taylor drew a six-pitch walk to start the frame and Sam Praytor gapped a double to left-center putting two in scoring position and driving Doxakis from the contest.Kaylor Chafin entered the game and struck out the first batter he faced, but Manning grounded to short, tying the game, and Malkin followed with a two-run home run to leftfield. UA 6, A&M 4.

B6 | Bedford lofted an 0-1 offering over the leftfield fence for a leadoff home run. UA 6, A&M 5.

B7 | The decisive frame started with Logan Foster reaching on an error. After the next two batter struck out, Baine Schoenvogel slapped a pinch-hit single down the rightfield line to put runners on the corners. Allonte Wingate pinch-ran for Schoenvogel and Bedford knocked in both runners when he hit a wall-banger to left-center for his second double of the game. A&M 7, UA 6.

B8 | Janca started the cavalcade of runs in the eghth with a single to left-center. Blake pushed him to second with a sacrifice bunt. Helman and Foster each drew walks to fill the bags with Ags. Shewmake chipped a two-run single down the rightfield line and Hunter Coleman followed with a single to leftfield to knock in Fister. Bedford capped off the scoring with a single down the rightfield line, knocking in Coleman and Shewmake. A&M 12, UA 6.
