Texas A&M University has reached an agreement in principle with Head Football Coach Kevin Sumlin on a new six-year contract, Director of Athletics Eric Hyman announced today (Saturday). Terms of the contract are pending approval by The Texas A&M University System Board of Regents at a future meeting.
“Coach Sumlin has demonstrated why he is considered among the nation’s elite football coaches. His coaching and recruiting abilities are only secondary to his integrity, class and passion for his student-athletes and this University,” Hyman said. “Texas A&M is making a sincere commitment to Kevin. We are fortunate that he is committed to remain an Aggie for a long time to come, and we are excited about what the future has in store.”
Said Sumlin: “I am humbled and very appreciative of the commitment that Texas A&M has extended not only to me and my family, but to our football program overall. We have only just begun to lay the foundation for sustained, long-term success here at Texas A&M, and we will work hard every day to make this great institution and the 12th Man proud.”
Sumlin is in his second year as Texas A&M’s head coach, having compiled a 19-5 record and a victory in the 2012 Cotton Bowl. No other Texas A&M football coach has won more than 18 games in his first two seasons in Aggieland.
Last season, Sumlin was named SEC Coach of the Year by the Associated Press and SEC Co-Coach of the Year by the league’s coaches. He was also a National Coach of the Year finalist. In six seasons as a head coach at Houston and Texas A&M, Sumlin has a career record of 54-22.
Hyman added that Regents Elaine Mendoza, who serves as the Board’s athletics liaison; and Cliff Thomas, the Board’s liaison to the 12th Man Foundation; were instrumental in assisting with Sumlin’s agreement.
