Kaser, Matthews & Ifedi Honored by the Sporting News

COLLEGE STATION, Texas – Texas A&M standouts Drew Kaser and Jake Matthews were honored Friday as the duo was named to 2013 Sporting News All-America team, while Aggie rookie Germain Ifedi was selected as a Freshman All-American.

Kaser, a sophomore from Strongsville, Ohio, is the leading punter in the Southeastern Conference with a 48.5 average, which is nearly two yards better than the second-ranked punter. With Kaser’s booming punts and a stellar punt coverage unit, the Aggies lead the SEC and rank No. 3 nationally in net punting with a 41.3 average.

In addition, Kaser has put 11 of his 26 punts inside the opponents’ 20 yard line and forced eight fair catches. Only seven of Kaser’s punts have been returned for just 67 yards with a long of 19 yards. Kaser has 11 punts of 50 yards or more, including a 76 yarder against Rice that tied for the sixth-longest in A&M history.

Kaser was a finalist for this season’s Ray Guy Award, which recognizes college football’s most outstanding punter.

Matthews, from Missouri City, Texas, is the team leader with 45 consecutive starts on the Aggies’ offensive front. The versatile Matthews held down the all-important left tackle position for the majority of 2013, but also made several starts at right tackle when injuries forced some lineup shuffling. With Matthews clearing the way, the Aggies led the SEC in passing offense, total offense and scoring offense. The Aggies go into the 2013 Chick-fil-A Bowl with 6,458 total yards, including 4,211 passing yards, and have scored 523 points.

Matthews, who was a finalist for the Outland Trophy, has also been named a Walter Camp All-American this week while also garnering the SEC’s Jacobs Blocking Trophy.

Additionally, offensive lineman Germain Ifedi was honored as a freshman All-American by the Sporting News. During his first season on the field in Aggieland, the redshirt freshman from Houston’s Westside High School played a key role in the high-powered A&M offense by starting each contest at the right guard spot.
