CONROE, Texas (AP) _ A Texas judge has dismissed intoxication manslaughter charges against a former National Guard recruiter who was found incompetent to stand trial in a crash that killed three people.
The Houston Chronicle reports (http://bit.ly/1wRWoQH) 44-year-old Ed Blackwell of Montgomery suffered a brain injury in the 2012 crash. A jury on Sept. 24 found Blackwell incompetent after medical experts testified that he suffers from dementia and has no memory of the crash.
Authorities say Blackwell had consumed 22 beers before driving the wrong way down Interstate 45. They say he caused the crash that killed two people in another vehicle and a passenger in his vehicle.
Blackwell was in a coma for 10 days after the accident and was hospitalized for more than a year.
