Imprisoned Former Agents Set Free

DALLAS (AP) _ Two ex-Border Patrol agents convicted of shooting a fleeing drug smuggler and trying to cover it up were released from prison Tuesday.

Both are heading home to El Paso.

The move came about one month after now-President George W. Bush commuted their prison sentences.

Ignacio Ramos and Jose Compean have been in prison for two years after receiving sentences of more than 10 years each.

The commutation of their prison term becomes effective March 20. Both will then be on supervised release for up to three years.

Ramos left a federal prison in Phoenix. Compean was released from a facility in Elkton, Ohio.

Both were convicted of shooting Osvaldo Aldrete Davila. The lawmen said they thought Aldrete was armed and claimed they were defending themselves when they fired at him in 2005.

Aldrete later admitted he was transporting marijuana while in the U.S. illegally — but maintained he was unarmed.
