Hurricane Warning Issued for Gulf Coast

McALLEN, Texas (AP) _ South Texas is buckling down after a hurricane warning was issued for the Gulf coast from Baffin Bay, near Kingsville, south into northern Mexico.

The National Hurricane Center also issued a tropical storm warning for the coast between Baffin Bay and Port O’Connor as Tropical Storm Alex churned in the Gulf of Mexico. Forecasters expected the storm to return to hurricane strength Tuesday.

Meteorologist Barry Goldsmith of the National Weather Service in Brownsville says the storm was projected to make landfall as a moderate to strong Category 1 hurricane. The path was expected to take Alex very near the mouth of the Rio Grande sometime Thursday.

Gov. Rick Perry issued a preemptory disaster proclamation Monday.
