ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) _ Dozens of families displaced by flooding caused by Tropical Storm Hermine are still in limbo while the City of Arlington debates whether it will buy their damaged homes.
Mayor Robert Cluck and other city leaders say they want a voluntary buyout program for residences along a creek where hundreds of homes and condominium units were damaged in the Sept. 8 storm.
But the city has yet to identify where the millions of dollars necessary for the project will come from.
Public Works Director Bob Lowry told the Fort Worth Star-Telegram that “an ugly situation” has emerged while the city applies for funds from the Federal Emergency Management Agency.
City officials believe that buying and tearing down all 57 flood-prone homes along the creek could cost as much as $18 million.
