Houstonians Head to Polls to Choose New Mayor

HOUSTON (AP) _ Turnout of only about 25 percent is forecast as voters chose among four major candidates hoping to become mayor of America’s fourth-largest city.

If no one gets 50 percent of Tuesday’s votes, the top two finishers will meet in a runoff, likely next month.

Architect and urban planner Peter Brown, a two-term Houston city councilman, sank more than $2 million of his wife’s wealth into his bid to succeed Bill White. White is term limited after six years in office.

The 72-year-old Brown faced 52-year-old city controller Annise Parker, who’d be Houston’s first openly gay mayor.

Also running is 61-year-old former city attorney Gene Locke, who’d be Houston’s second black mayor.

And 53-year-old county school trustee, Roy Morales, hopes to become the city’s first Hispanic mayor.
