When Sasha Cooke attended A&M Consolidated High School, she loved choir, but never imagined a career as a singer.
So when they announced her name on February 12, 2012 at the Grammy Music Awards in Los Angeles, it was a huge surprise. Complications with babysitters, L.A. traffic and parking gave Cooke only 15 minutes to sit in the audience before getting on stage to accept the Grammy for best opera recording.
The 29 year-old said even now, three weeks after winning, it still feels surreal. She said the nomination was an honor in itself, but to win was just completely unexpected.
Cooke now lives in Chicago with her husband and 10 month-old daughter. She will return to Texas in December to perform with the Dallas Opera and the Houston Grand Opera.
