Galveston Animal Control Picks Up Pet Caiman

GALVESTON, Texas (AP) _ A large reptile has been removed from a Galveston home after a nearby animal control officer noticed a “Beware of alligator” sign.

Galveston police say the animal control officer was in the area this week to capture a stray animal when he saw the sign on the home’s backyard fence. The officer found a 4-foot-long caiman, a reptile similar to an alligator. It was being kept as a pet with a heated pool and shelter.

The officer couldn’t contact the owner but removed the reptile. The animal is being temporarily housed at the Moody Gardens resort because the area humane society shelter isn’t equipped for caimans.

Caimans are typically found in Central and South American and can grow up to 8 feet in length.
