Texas A&M’s convincing victory over the Auburn Tigers in last Saturday’s Southeastern Conference opener yielded weekly honors for senior Justin Evans, freshman Trayveon Williams, graduate Trevor Knight and sophomoreDaniel LaCamera on Monday.
Evans and Williams earned weekly honors from the SEC, Knight was honored by the Davey O’Brien National Quarterback Award and LaCamera received kudos from the Lou Groza Placekicker Award.
Evans, a senior strong safety from Wiggins, Miss., was named SEC Defensive Player of the Week after posting a game-high 12 tackles, including 10 solo hits, and a tackle for loss of yardage as the Aggie defense limited the high-powered Auburn offense to under 400 total yards, including just 163 passing yards.
Williams, a freshman running back from Houston, Texas, earned SEC Freshman of Week honors after logging his first career 100-yard rushing game with 127 yards on just eight carries. His 89-yard touchdown burst in the fourth quarter effectively clinched the hard-fought win for the Aggies. It was the seventh-longest rush in school history and the longest by an Aggie since Christine Michael’s school-record 97-yarder against Baylor in 2009.
Knight, a graduate transfer quarterback from San Antonio via the University of Oklahoma, was named one of the Davey O’Brien Award “Great 8” weekly honorees after accounting for 289 total yards with 247 through the air and 42 on the ground. The Davey O’Brien Quarterback of the Week will be determined on Tuesday.
LaCamera, a sophomore placekicker from Tarpon Springs, Fla., was named a “Star of the Week” by the Lou Groza Award after connecting on a career-high five field goals and accounting for 17 points in the Aggies 29-16 victory over the Tigers. LaCamera’s three-pointers came from distances of 46, 35, 31, 25 and 26 yards and the first-time starter has now been successful on nine straight field goals since missing his first career attempt in the season-opener.
