Fort Worth Police Officer Shot, Wounded

FORT WORTH, Texas (AP) _ A 25-year-old Fort Worth man has been charged with attempted capital murder after a police officer was shot and wounded while checking a report of a suspicious person.

Joe Nathan Haywood III has been charged and taken to police headquarters for questioning in the shooting of Officer C. Hankins.

Officer Sharron Neal says Hankins spotted the man Thursday afternoon and got out of his car to make contact when the person shot him and fled on foot. She says Hankins was able to radio that he’d been shot. He’s now in stable condition after surgery at John Peter Smith Hospital in Fort Worth.

Hankins is a 16-year police department veteran. Neal had no information on whether Haywood had an attorney.
