A man active in College Station government for more than 25 years and activities at Texas A&M University for more than 60 years has died.
John Richard “Dick” Birdwell passed away Wednesday at the age of 81.
A native of Stephenville, Birdwell graduated from Consolidated High School then A&M in 1953.
Following a 25 year career with Dow Chemical, Birdwell returned to College Station in 1986.
Two years later, Birdwell was elected to the first of three terms on the city council, serving from 1988-1992 then 1996-1998.
Birdwell took on other city causes. Among them was a petition drive that led to freezing property taxes for senior citizens and the disabled.
More recently, Birdwell served on College Station’s cemetery committee, the sunset advisory commission, and was an alternate member of the zoning board of adjustments.
College Station Mayor Nancy Berry says Birdwell’s death is “a phenominal loss for our community.”

According to an Aggie Network webpage, Birdwell served as mayor of Lake Jackson and was active in professional and A&M activities.
