COLLEGE STATION– Former Texas A&M head football coach R.C. Slocum, following out-patient tests at M.D. Anderson Hospital in Houston, has been diagnosed with a form of Hodgkin’s lymphoma. He will require chemotherapy, and will undergo that at Scott and White Hospital in College Station in consultation with M.D. Anderson.

Slocum had the following to say about his diagnosis, “ I have been so encouraged by the outpouring of love, prayers, and support from friends everywhere. I have great medical support and I will get started on this challenge as soon as possible. I have a strong faith and will trust for a positive outcome.”

Slocum first came to Texas A&M as an assistant in 1972, and remained in Aggieland for 31 of the next 32 years, leaving just once in 1980 to serve as the defensive coordinator at USC.

He replaced Jackie Sherrill as the Aggies’ head coach in 1989, and would go on to lead the Maroon & White to 123 wins and 11 bowl appearances over the next 14 years.

Slocum also served as Texas A&M’s interim athletics director in 2019 until the hiring of Ross Bjork.

He was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 2012.
