Five Aggies to Compete in ITA Texas Regional

The Texas A&M women’s tennis team are set to compete in the ITA Texas Regional Championships at TCU’s Friedman Tennis Center, October 9-14.
The ITA consists of 13 different regions around the country. Each regional features 64 players for main draw and qualifiers, with 32 teams for doubles. The two singles finalists and doubles champion from each regional qualify for the NCAA Individual Championships help in Orlando, November 18-23.
Five Aggies make the trek to Fort Worth including, No. 22 Mia Kupres, No. 64 Daria Smetannikov, Avery Esquivel, Illinois transfer Violeta Martinez, and freshman Anna Perelman.
Beginning Thursday, Perelman battles Natalia Castaneda Guerrero of UTSA in the qualifiers. Esquivel competes against Victoria Franklin of Incarnate Word. Both seek their first wins of the season. The other three Aggies compete in singles main draw beginning Friday.
On the doubles side, Martinez/Perelman face off against Juliette Jalai/Ofer Kivity on Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. While senior duo No. 38 Kupres/Smetannikov compete following qualifiers Thursday.
Last season, Kupres earned a 27-6 singles record while gaining All-SEC Second Team and NCAA Championship All-Tournament Team Recognition. Smetannikov notched a 29-12 singles record, while earning 24 doubles wins. Martinez  warranted ITA Scholar Athlete, while going 12-8 overall in singles and 18-10 in doubles play, last season at Illinois.
Matchups for the singles and doubles main draw will be decided after the conclusion of Thursday’s qualifiers.
