First Phase of Freeway Work Starts Tuesday

The first phase of a $9.6 million dollar upgrade of the Earl Rudder Freeway starts Tuesday.

The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) says Tuesday morning at 8:30, closures begin on two southbound ramps and one lane of the southbound frontage road between University Drive and Harvey Road.

Closed for two months will be the southbound freeway exit ramp to Harvey Road and the southbound entrance ramp from University to the freeway.

TxDOT says these ramp closures allow the contractor to remove the existing ramps and construct new ramps.

The inside lane of the southbound frontage road will also be closed leaving one lane of traffic. This closure will allow the contractor to begin roadway widening operations for a future auxiliary lane between the two ramps.

Along with these closures a 60 miles per hour construction speed zone will be in place on the freeway, which TxDOT says will be enforced.

The entire project, along the freeway from the Emerald Parkway/Harvey Mitchell exit in College Station to the William Joel Bryan/Boonville Road exit in Bryan, is scheduled to be completed by the end of December 2014, weather permitting.
