The New Year’s weekend forecast, which includes below freezing temperatures and the possibility of rain and/or freezing precipitation, means an increased risk of fires and paying more attention to your pets.
Bryan deputy fire marshal William Bouse says fires have started using stoves as heating devices, along with using “dollar store” extension cords to connect space heaters and other appliances that draw a large amount of electricity. Bouse says it’s a good idea to check furnace filters and replace them if necessary.

Cold weather also means a balancing act at the Aggieland Humane Society to keep animals warm and well. The humane society’s Leiha White, on WTAW’s The Infomaniacs, reminds owners of outside dogs to keep dry bedding inside doghouses…which has been a challenge with recent rain and snow. In addition to dogs and cats, the humane society has been taking care of a pair of stray pigs.
