Federal Grant Sought For Expanding Blinn Workforce Training Following Layoffs and Furloughs

In the aftermath of hundreds of layoffs and furloughs from employers in Washington County, affecting people in Brazos and surrounding counties, there’s a joint effort to expand workforce training at Blinn College in Brenham.

Blinn spokesman Richard Bray says an application was filed Wednesday for a $1.5 million dollar federal grant. Combined with $500,000 in local pledges, the $2 million would build a 12,000 square foot facility next to an existing training center at the Brenham Business Park at Highway 290 and Blue Bell Road.

Bray says there no additional people would be required to administer the addition, which would double Blinn’s capacity at that location with multi-purpose classrooms, labs, and training space.

New programs in the new building would include industrial machinery mechanics, commercial truck driving and heavy equipment operation, and a supporting program in diesel engine mechanics.

The Brenham Community Development Corporation pledged $250,000 in cash and $100,000 in land for the new center. And Washington County commissioners committed $50,000 dollars.
