Federal Court Upholds Muslim Charity Convictions

NEW ORLEANS (AP) _ A federal appeals court has affirmed the convictions of five organizers of a Muslim charity in Texas tied to funneling money to the Palestinian terrorist group Hamas.

The U.S. Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals issued an opinion Wednesday stating that the members of the Holy Land Foundation received fair trials when they were convicted of money laundering and other crimes in 2008. The foundation was based in the Dallas suburb of Richardson.

The opinion stated that “no trial is perfect.” But it said the three-judge panel could find nothing sufficient to overturn the convictions. It also cited “voluminous” evidence connecting the defendants to Hamas.

The defendants had argued that the trial judge improperly protected the identities of two Israeli witnesses and should not have allowed testimony about Hamas’ terrorist activities.
