Faulty Two Inch Cap Responsible for Geyser at University and Freeway

A 50-foot-tall geyser at University Drive and the Earl Rudder Freeway caused halted traffic around 9 a.m. Both directions of  traffic on University from the westbound frontage road to  Glenhaven Drive were rerouted.

Dave Coleman, Director of Water Services for College Station, says a 2-inch cap that was installed during construction on the 18-inch pipe to bleed air may have had a manufacturing defect. “That’s why we had such a beautiful geyser going straight up in the air—because it was coming out of a two inch opening.”

He said despite the impressive nature of problem, “Leak-a-palooza” should cause minimal disruption. “We were able to work the valves in the area so that none of the customers are out of water service.”

The water was under control by 10 a.m., and most lanes of traffic resumed by 10:30.
