It is official, that South Carolina’s Eric Hyman is Texas A&M’s choice as it’s new Athletics Director.
He will be formally introduced tomorrow on the A&M campus Saturday at 4 p.m. It will be carried on 1150-AM the Zone.
Hyman himself has tendered his resignation from South Carolina and has issued this statement on the South Carolina Athletic website.
“I am very excited for the opportunity to help transition Texas A&M into the Southeastern Conference,” said Hyman. “While this is a tremendous opportunity, the downside is leaving all the dedicated and loyal fans in Gamecock Nation and the best athletic department in the country. Pauline and I have loved living inColumbia. It will be sad to leave all the wonderful friends we have made.”
Hyman will be coming back toTexaswhere his grown married children live and where he was AD at TCU for seven years, having hired both Dennis Franchione and then making the obviously good decision to promote Gary Patterson after Franchione left forAlabama.
At South Carolina since 2005 he has helped guide the Gamecocks to competitive in all sports, having hired basketball coach Frank Martin this last winter from Kansas State and seeing the South Carolina Baseball program win two straight College World Series titles and make it to the championship round last week.
The football team won a program-record 11 games last fall.
Hyman is 61. A&M President R Bowen Loftin has just today been given authority to negotiated the hire so still no word on when the formal introduction will be.
Hyman is a former football player atNorth Carolinaand previously was AD at VMI and Miami of Ohio.
Hyman will take over for Texas A&M’s Bill Byrne, who retired in May.
Texas A&M is officially joining the SEC on Sunday.
