Drunk Driving Dad Faces Punishment in Kids’ Deaths

HOUSTON (AP) _ A Houston father could learn his fate for the drunken driving deaths of five children, including three of his own.

The children drowned after he lost control of his car and veered into a rain-swollen ditch.

A court hearing to decide 34-year-old Chanton Jenkins’ punishment continues Thursday in a Houston courtroom. The hearing began last week but was delayed due to a scheduling conflict.

The judge in the case was expected to announce Jenkins’ sentence after the hearing. Jenkins faces up to life in prison for five counts of intoxication manslaughter.

Police say Jenkins was driving drunk and using his cell phone on April 18, 2009, when he lost control of his car, which was carrying seven passengers. The vehicle veered off the road and into the ditch.
