Drowning at Gibbons Creek Lake

There was a drowning Monday at Gibbons Creek Lake. The Grimes County Sheriff’s Office identified the victim as 63 year old Calvin Offord of Simonton. An autopsy will be done by the Travis County Medical Examiner’s Office.

Witnesses reported an unoccupied fishing boat on the northern part of the lake. Because the boat was not near a ramp or public area, witnesses began a search.

A short time later a body was seen floating in the lake near the warm water discharge point of the lake, which is used by a nearby power plant. The body was about 300 yards from the boat.

Further investigation indicated there was some type of mechanical problem with the boat engine, which may have been a factor. There was no evidence of alcohol and no signs of foul play.

Park records indicated the victim arrived alone at the lake to fish on Sunday.
