Drought Could Adversely Affect Turkeys

LUBBOCK, Texas (AP) _ State wildlife biologists are concerned that Texas’ ongoing drought could have a bad effect on wild turkey production and hunting prospects this spring.

Texas Parks and Wildlife Department biologists said Wednesday that parched range conditions, particularly in the southern part of the state, could reduce or eliminate breeding activity and the birds’ efforts to nest. Since spring turkey hunters rely upon gobbling activity to locate and attract birds, hens’ lack of interest in breeding could make for tough hunting.

All of Texas is in some stage of drought, but parts of Central Texas and the Hill Country are exceptionally dry.

December through February was the driest winter on record, National Weather Service officials said.
