NEW ORLEANS – Texas A&M junior Devin Dixon was named the South Central Region Track Athlete of the Year for the 2019 Division I outdoor season by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) on Friday.
Dixon, of McDonough, Georgia, set the collegiate leading mark in the 800m for this season with a 1:44.76 to win his third consecutive SEC Outdoor title and broke a 12-year-old meet record. Dixon’s time ranks 12th all-time among collegians and he is the seventh fastest U.S. collegian on the all-time list.
On the A&M all-time list, Dixon ranks as the No. 2 performer with the No. 2 performance, and has produced five of the top 10 performances on the A&M list over the past three seasons.
For the 2019 season, Dixon’s 800m time currently ranks sixth on the world list and he is second among Americans.
In winning a third consecutive SEC 800m title, Dixon joined a trio of athletes who have claimed three or more SEC Outdoor titles in that event. They include Mark Everett of Florida and Jose Parrilla of Tennessee, who each claimed four consecutive outdoor titles, as well as Seneca Lassiter of Arkansas, who won three titles in a four-year span.
In addition to his exploits at 800m, Dixon supplies the Aggies with key anchor legs on the 4×400 relay. With Texas A&M posting a collegiate-leading time of 3:01.77 in winning the SEC title, Dixon closed out the victory with a 44.32 split. His lone race at 400m this outdoor season produced a winning time of 45.87 at Texas A&M’s Reveille meet.
During the Texas Relays in Austin earlier this season, Dixon was part of winning efforts in the 4×400 (44.45 split) and 4×800 relays (1:47.38) along with a runner-up finish in the sprint medley relay (44.2 third leg).
The Aggies will return to the Austin track next week for the NCAA Championships, held June 5-8.
