Deputy and Kidnapping Suspect Trade Gunfire Near Baylor

WACO, Texas (AP) _ Authorities say a McLennan County sheriff’s lieutenant has been shot in the leg by a kidnapping suspect near the campus of Baylor University.

Chief Sheriff’s Deputy Matt Cawthon told the Waco Tribune-Herald (http://bit.ly/J6y3So) that Lieutenant Johnny Spillman was shot during an exchange of gunfire near campus Wednesday afternoon. Cawthon said 25-year-old Michael Alvarado was arrested in the shooting.

Waco police Sgt. W. Patrick Swanton said Alvarado had kidnapped a woman he knew at gunpoint from a home. Several agencies responded to a storage unit where Alvarado allegedly fled. Swanton said as authorities closed in Alvarado tried to ram through a gate and then began firing. That’s when Spillman was hit.

Cawthon said Spillman was in stable condition. Alvarado was wounded and in critical condition. The woman was not injured.
