Deal Approved in BP Refinery Blast Lawsuit

HOUSTON (AP) _ A federal judge in Houston approved a highly criticized plea deal that fines BP $50 million for its criminal role in a deadly 2005 blast.

The explosion at BP’s Texas City refinery killed 15 people.

The deal, which has a BP subsidiary pleading guilty to a violation of the Clean Air Act, also sentences the oil giant to three years probation.

The plea deal was first announced in October 2007. Its acceptance was delayed while the judge held hearings in which blast victims objected.

Both prosecutors and BP defended the plea agreement as the harshest option available.

BP says the company regrets the harm caused by the explosion and will continue to reduce risk, increase plant integrity and ensure environmental compliance.

Eva Rowe, whose parents, workers James and Linda Rowe, were killed in the blast — said judge’s decision was “not right.”
