Dallas Schools Auction Ill-Gotten Items

DALLAS (AP) _ The Dallas Independent School District is conducting an online auction this month of items confiscated from employees who fraudulently used the district’s credit cards.

The Dallas Morning News reported Tuesday that the 72 auction items were turned over to the district by the FBI. They include computers, cameras, printers, clothes, personal items and jewelry.

In 2006, the newspaper reported several hundred DISD employees inappropriately used their district credit cards by several million dollars. The district disciplined 86 employees and ended the credit card program.

District spokesman Jon Dahlander said some of the items were illegally purchased by Gloria Orapello, a former secretary. She was sentenced to a year in prison and ordered to pay $100,000 in restitution.

Proceeds from the sale will reduce the restitution owed.

Dahlander said the district will keep the money from the auction, which ends April 29.
