CSISD Student Expectations Going Up As Funding Goes Down

Accountability and budget were the two main topics of College Station ISD’s open forum on Thursday evening. Superintendent Eddie Coulson said as student expectations are increasing, funding is decreasing.

CSISD will receive over 9% less state funding per student for the 2012-2013 school year compared to the 2010-2011 school year.

Coulson said the legislature was forced to make reductions due to the economic situation, a complicated school finance system and a different tax structure.

At the meeting, Coulson compared state testing from 30 years ago to the new STAAR test showing how much higher today’s standards are for high school students. He said high standards are a must, but the accountability system needs to be balanced and not weigh so heavily on one state test.

In conclusion, Coulson advised the public to vote in the upcoming elections for what they believe is right for public education.
