More than 20 College Station firefighters fought a grass fire off a SH 6 frontage road Tuesday afternoon.
According to CSFD, the fire in a vacant lot next to At Home and behind Masfajitas restaurant was reported shortly after 1 p.m.
An officer on the first engine to arrive realized several homes were in the direct path of the wind-driven fire and called for a full response.
Firefighters were able to head off the flames with wild land tools and light-weight hose lines before the flames reached the homes.
The cause is still under investigation.
CSFD has two reminders:
- Be mindful of how you extinguish smoking materials and discard cigarettes in the proper place, such as an outdoor ashtray.
- Even if there is not a burn-ban in your area, do not burn when winds are high and conditions are dry.
