A College Station woman has been arrested for child abandonment.

28 year old Ebony Wilson was taken to jail after police found her three year old son outside their home twice in a three hour period Wednesday morning.

Police say the second time, the boy was playing in the street in the area of Cherry and Nagle in and around moving traffic.

Officers say the mother said her son sneaked out the first time and she had no explanation the second time.

The son was placed with other family members, and there are no other children in the household.

News release from College Station Police:

On 10/9/13 at approximately 0858 hrs officers of the College Station Police Department were dispatched to the area of Cherry and Stasney Streets in regards to a report of a three year old child that had been found playing unaccompanied in the area. Upon arrival of a relative of the child it was determined that the child lived a short distance away in the 400 blk of Stasney. Contact was made with the mother of the child who stated that she was unaware that the child had been able to sneak out of the residence without her noticing.

At approximately 1159 hrs, the same officer was dispatched to the area of Cherry and Nagle Streets in regards to a small child that had been found playing in the roadway and riding a bicycle in and around moving traffic. The officer had College Station Police Department dispatchers contact the mother of the child from the earlier call and she told dispatchers that her child was with her at that time.

The officer arrived on scene at Cherry and Nagle and saw that it was in fact the same child from the previous call. The witness on scene stated that he had seen the child pushing his bicycle out of the roadway where he was reported to have been riding in and around traffic, almost being struck by motorists.

The officer made contact with the mother who claimed that when contacted by dispatch she had checked on her child and he was in the residence at that time. She was unable to explain how the child was outside riding in traffic at the time she said he was with her.

The mother of the child was arrested and charged with Abandoning or Endangering a Child (State Jail Felony), which states:

§ 22.041. ABANDONING OR ENDANGERING CHILD
(c) A person commits an offense if he intentionally, knowingly, recklessly, or with criminal negligence, by act or omission, engages in conduct that places a child younger than 15 years in imminent danger of death, bodily injury, or physical or mental impairment.
