Lt. Chuck Fleeger says an off duty Brazos County Sheriff’s Office Sergeant reported seeing a man passed out in his pickup in a parking lot at William D. Fitch and the freeway.
When awakened by the CSPD officers, the suspect drove off, heading north on Highway 6. At the Barron Road overpass, the truck struck two barriers. With the vehicle still moving the suspect jumped out. He ran to the edge of the overpass, jumped 25 feet to the ground, and ran into the Shenandoah subdivision.
Fleeger says women living in two homes came in contact with the suspect. The first said the suspect was not able to open the door. The second said the suspect opened the door but she was able to force him back outside.
About two and a half hours after it started, 32 year old Tyree Newton of College Station was taken into custody and taken for medical treatment of injuries associated with his jump off the overpass.
Newton was arrested for evading arrest in the truck, evading arrest on foot, criminal trespass by gaining access to the first home, attempted criminal trespass involving the second home, failure to identify himself as a fugitive, and a Leon County warrant accusing him of organized criminal activity.
Lt. Fleeger says back at the freeway overpass at Barron Road, the pickup that Newton jumped out of struck a barrier for a third time before coming to a stop, which blocked northbound traffic. A semi rear-ended a SUV which was slowing down to avoid hitting Newton’s truck. The driver of the SUV complained of pain at the scene while the driver of the semi reported no injuries.
Assisting CSPD during the search were officers from Texas A&M police and the Brazos County Sheriff’s Office.
Fleeger says after Newton tried to break into the first home, the Brazos County Emergency Communications District provided a reverse 9-1-1 notification to the area urging residents to use caution and advising them of the ongoing incident.
