College Station’s Police Chief wants to reduce the number of wrecker companies doing business with the city.
Chief Jeff Capps has asked the city council to award at least two towing companies a city-wide contract.
The selected contractors would be awarded contracts for all city generated tows including those from the Police Department, Fleet Services, or any other city department needing towing services.
That would include vehicle owners who don’t ask for a specific wrecker service.
Eight have responded to a request for proposal.
Capps says last year, 29 companies received permits covering 61 wreckers and 11 vehicle storage facilities.
While the city received $5,800 dollars in fees, Capps says police employees spent 256 hours on the inspections.
The topic coming to Thursday’s College Station City Council meeting follows a similar attempt in Bryan six weeks ago. The Bryan council heard from owners of multiple towing companies who said they would be put out of business. Chief Eric Buske, who said he’s not comfortable endorsing some of their wrecker services, then withdrew his request.
