CS Council Approves FY 16 Budget With One No Vote

With one exception, the College Station city council was unanimous in approving the budget for the fiscal year that starts next Thursday.

Julie Schultz was alone in calling for a separate vote on the request from the convention and visitors bureau (CVB) for an additional $406,000 dollars from the hotel occupancy tax for additional marketing. Then Schultz voted no on the FY 16 budget as presented.

CVB president Shannon Overby told Schultz a local company has been hired to come up with another theme to market the twin cities.

Also gone is the idea of a new logo, where the lettering for College Station was smaller compared to Bryan.

The Dallas company that came up with the ideas for the logo and “Supernatural Goodness” remains with the CVB to place future advertising.

Overby told Schultz the methods that will be used to measure the success of the marketing.

Overby also told Schultz the CVB’s marketing committee, which includes city representation, will meet monthly instead of quarterly.

Before voting no, Schultz said “I just wanted to have them (the CVB) come back and ask for that additional marketing budget later once we get a feel of what’s really going to happen with that. And it was presented in a confused way.”

After the 5-1 vote approving the budget, the council unanimously approved the FY 16 property tax rate of 45.25 cents per $100 of valuation, which is the same as the FY 15 rate.
