The College Station city council Thursday night approved the first of what could be four gateway monuments welcoming motorists to town.
An agreement with the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) allows the city to construct and maintain a monument northwest of the intersection of University and the freeway, in front of Olive Garden.
The monument, located within TxDOT right-of-way, will be visible to southbound traffic along the freeway.
Public Works Director Donald Harmon said the 11 foot tall, $75,000 dollar monument, will take two to three months to award to a contractor.
It is unlikely the monument will be completed before the start of the Texas A&M football season.
The council will decide locations of the three remaining monuments as well as the future of six existing welcome signs.
