Crockett TYC Inmate Commits Suicide

CROCKETT, Texas (AP) _ Authorities say a 14-year-old inmate at the Texas Youth Commission’s juvenile prison in Crockett has hanged himself.

Houston County Judge Lonnie Hunt said the boy hanged himself with his own underwear.

The Houston Chronicle reports Hunt said a TYC officer found the teen early Monday morning after someone alerted him that paper covered the window of the door to the teen’s room.

TYC Executive Commissioner Cherie Townsend says a comprehensive investigation is being conducted to determine how the teen was able to take his life while in custody.

TYC spokesman Jim Hurley said a criminal investigation and an administrative review are under way.

State lawmakers overhauled TYC after the agency came under fire in early 2007 when allegations surfaced that administrators at the West Texas State School in Pyote sexually abused inmates.

The Crockett State School, a 265-bed facility, is about 110 miles north of Houston.
