Cowboys fire Phillips after 1-7 start

Since he fired Tom Landry in 1988, Cowboys owner Jerry Jones has hired and fired six coaches but until yesterday had never done it in mid-season. But Jones had seen enough from the now 1-7 Cowboys and parted ways with Wade Phillips. The last straw was the Cowboys’ 45-7 loss at Green Bay on Sunday night.

Jason Garrett, the former back-up quarterback, has been given the head coaching job on an interim basis until the end of the season. Whether he earns is permanently will certainly depend on performnace and how the players react to him.

Phillips was 34-22 over 3 1/2 seasons and won the NFC East twice.
