Convicted Killer Ordered Released While Case Investigated

DALLAS (AP) _ A convicted murderer who has been jailed for 14 years is expected to be freed Monday after Dallas prosecutors acknowledged his original trial was tainted.

Richard Miles was sentenced to 40 years in prison during his 1995 trial for murder and attempted murder.

But the Dallas County District Attorney acknowledged last week that police failed to disclose evidence that implicated another suspect. Miles’ former attorney never learned that police received an anonymous tip from a woman who said her ex-boyfriend showed her a 9mm pistol he said he used in the 1994 shootings that left one person dead and a second permanently disabled.

Dallas DA Craig Watkins said Miles, 34, will be released on bond while authorities investigate whether he is innocent.
