Orange colored portable fences to protect trees along Texas Avenue…mostly in Bryan…begins the second of three phases of construction by the Texas Department of Transportation.

A spokesman at the TxDOT district office in Bryan says their contractor will be working through the spring of 2027 on Texas between University and Highway 21 to replace traffic signals and install landscaping and what they call intelligent transportation system equipment.

TxDOT anticipates the final phase to begin in the fall of 2028. The list of improvements includes pavement widening called loons at selected intersections. That’s to accommodate U-turns caused by center medians that were added two years ago. Construction also includes new shared use paths, modifying drainage and curbs at intersections, and installing safety lighting and more traffic signals.

The TxDOT update to WTAW News did not mention removing any sections of the median as sought by Bryan citizens and the city council.
