Construction Starting Soon on Three More Texas A&M Projects

The Texas A&M System board of regents Thursday gave the green light to the start of three construction projects on the flagship campus, with a combined value of $367 million dollars.

The most private money raised for a building on the A&M campus is not Kyle Field. Dean of Engineering Dr. Katherine Banks told the regents $58 million has been pledged so far on the $169 million engineering education center.

Another $90 million comes from A&M’s share of the permanent university fund (PUF), which is revenue generated from oil and gas leases…and has been more than expected in the days of high prices. Chancellor John Sharp says even with lower oil prices, the system will continue to receive PUF money.

The regents approved construction contracts for two other projects that will not involve PUF. $149 million, most of it bond money, will pay to renovate the remaining nine Corps of Cadets dorms and add two leadership learning centers in the Quad. And the Commons Building is getting a $49 million dollar makeover. $6 million of that will be paid by the company providing A&M’s dining services.
