Construction of New Roundabout Begins Monday

Monday starts the construction of Bryan’s latest roundabout, connecting a soon to open 490 unit apartment complex to the intersection of Nash and Broadmoor.

The project also includes permanent traffic islands at Broadmoor and Trophy.

Both the roundabout and concrete islands are to address the increased traffic that will be generated by the new apartments.

According to the city of Bryan, Nash will be closed for up to three weeks between now and mid-August, though there will be access to affected businesses.

News release from the city of Bryan:

Beginning the week of May 16, 2016, construction on the permanent roundabout at Broadmoor Drive and Nash Street will begin. This project is responsive to community concerns regarding traffic associated with the apartment complex on the north side of Nash Street that is soon to open.

The roundabout will moderate the flow of traffic while also providing a safer and more efficient intersection for everyone. The permanent roundabout is larger than the temporary roundabout and is designed to work safely and efficiently with the new driveway of the apartment complex.

New sidewalks and crosswalks will be constructed, improving safety for pedestrians. There will be landscaping in the central island and brick pavers in the truck apron and the various traffic islands for aesthetics. Permanent traffic signs and pavement markings will further enhance the safe and efficient operation of the roundabout.

Also occurring as part of this project is the construction of the permanent traffic islands at the intersection of Broadmoor Drive and Trophy Drive.

In November 2015 the City of Bryan installed a temporary roundabout at the intersection of Broadmoor Drive and Nash Street for a three week test period. The temporary testing revealed that the vast majority of motorists have an appropriate level of understanding of roundabouts and demonstrated their ability to travel through them safely. It also provided the opportunity to inform the public of what was being considered for this intersection. As the test was viewed as successful, the City of Bryan decided to move forward with the concept of this intersection being converted into a single lane roundabout.

Construction is anticipated to be completed by mid August 2016. Sometime during the construction process, the intersection of Broadmoor Drive and Nash Street must be fully closed for up to three weeks so the contractor can complete critical work that cannot be otherwise accomplished. Access to local businesses and their driveways will be maintained at all times during the construction project.
