Committee Approves Stem Cell Disclosure

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) _ A legislative committee has approved a proposal requiring state agencies and universities to report on any stem cell research they are conducting, funding or supporting.

The new bill was proposed by Sen. Steve Ogden, a Bryan Republican who had placed a provision in the state budget to thwart embryonic stem cell research. He said he offered the new bill, “to try and find out, frankly, what is going on because we as policymakers don’t know.”

His new bill was approved 5-0 late Tuesday, with all five GOP members of the Health and Human Services Committee voting for it.
