College Station Has Six More Historical Buildings

The College Station historical preservation committee normally issues one historical marker each year.

Six were presented at the last city council meeting.

Committee chairman Gerald Burgner presented plaques to the property owners residing in the McCullough neighborhood, the oldest African-American neighborhood in the city.

The ownership of two of the homes, the Merchant House on Detroit Street and the Searcy House on Phoenix Street, included Texas A&M professor Luther Jones, who was a member of the first College Station city council.

Ownership of the Searcy House also included Freely Calhoun, who organized the first African-American baseball league in College Station.

Markers were also presented a second home on Phoenix, a home on Holleman, and to two churches…St. Matthew Baptist on Holleman and Pleasant Grove Baptist on Detroit.
