College Station Council Selects Site of New Police Department Building

The College Station city council is proceeding with a new police department campus next to Central Park at Dartmouth and Krenek Tap.

Staff says CSPD’s current building, at 29,000 square feet, is less than half of what it should be for the city’s current population of just over 100,000.

Mayor Nancy Berry wanted the new building at 94,000 square feet, to handle a population of 200,000.

While the council has been unanimous for more space, there were two opinions on the location of CSPD’s new home.

At least two members of the council, Blanche Brick and Karl Mooney, wanted the location next to the utilities office and municipal court. Both supported using a combination of existing city property and buying three lots that are privately owned.

Councilman John Nichols supported the location next to Central Park because he estimated it would take one year to acquire the additional land for the other site.

The design of the new campus is expected to take the balance of this year, with construction starting next year and completion in 2018.
