College Station Council Considering Regulating Yellow Rental Bicycles And Other “Dockless” Vehicles

The College Station city council this week decided to consider regulations for what are technically “dockless vehicles”.

Among other things, this would cover the yellow rental bicycles that are based at Texas A&M University, but have been found in various locations throughout College Station and Bryan since their introduction last year.

Councilmembers said A&M began with 2,000 yellow bicycles but more are on their way.

Councilman James Benham referred to regulations enacted in Austin on April 26th.

According to the Austin Transportation Department, riders are required to yield to pedestrians on sidewalks, park bicycles in a secure, upright position in designated areas, and stay in the right of way as opposed to private property, parkland, state-owned land or other unauthorized areas.

Before the council decided to discuss regulations at the end of Monday’s meeting, College Station resident Hugh Lindsay asked for them during public comments.
