College Station Council Approves Design of New Gateway Signs

We’re still months away from seeing the first of new gateway signs welcoming motorists to College Station.

Public Works Director Donald Harmon told the city council at its last meeting the first sign will be installed on the freeway for southbound motorists to see near University.

Harmon says it is modeled after what is in place in Navasota and Caldwell, with the final say of the Texas Department of Transportation.

TxDOT granted a waiver, allowing not only the name of the city but adding the slogan “Home of Texas A&M University.”

Harmon also told WTAW News:

1. The location of the first sign is the northwest quadrant of the interchange (southbound from Bryan) of SH6 and University Drive. The slide was only to show the relative scale, not the exact location.

2. Council provided direction for the design of the sign.

3. We are proceeding with a detailed survey and soil study for the sign foundation.

4. We will work through the design with TxDOT input in order to complete the plans, specifications and cost estimate for the sign construction.

5. Upon completion of the plans, the agreement with TxDOT will be presented to Council for their approval (probably in 2-3 months).

6. The City of College Station is responsible for the design and construction of the sign.
