For the third time in the last 12 months, the College Station city council talks about planting trees to reduce outdoor temperatures.

There was no opposition during the September 22 council meeting to proceed with what is formally known as “urban heat mitigation”.

The idea from councilman John Crompton could drop ground level temperatures by six degrees.

Yet to be decided, is how to pay an estimated $4 million dollars to plant 7,200 trees during the next five years.

Crompton had two funding ideas…adding a fee to utility bills and recruiting a venture capitalist who would make money issuing bonds on the environmental project.

Other suggestions included tapping city parkland dedication money and pursuing grants.

Mayor Karl Mooney was the first to say that this is the time of year to start planting.
