With the holidays over but more cold weather on the way, Travis Miller with A&M Agrilife Extension Service says things are actually in pretty good shape for producers and ranchers.
Miller says cold weather means livestock needs more food in order to stay warm, so make sure hay supply is readily available to the cows, but on the positive side, the extended cold temperatures reduce the number of crop-damaging insects.
Meanwhile, Miller says there’s been excellent moisture so winter wheat is doing well, and things are just slowed down a bit by the cold temperatures.
Miller says the climactic models have us on equal chances of above or below normal temperatures and rainfall, so its hard to tell yet whether February will be colder than usual.
