DALLAS (AP) _ Cleanup is under way after two East Texas tornadoes damaged or destroyed more than a dozen homes, overturned a tractor-trailer rig and caused significant damage to a small town’s public school.
The Sunday tornadoes struck Rice, about 40 miles southest of Dallas, and near Lone Oak, about 50 miles northeast of Dallas. Four people suffered minor injuries.
The National Weather Service on Monday classified the Rice tornado as an EF-2 with estimated wind speeds of up to 135 miles per hour and the Lone Star tornado as an EF-0 with winds of 80 to 85 miles per hour.
The weather service says the Rice twister carved a seven-mile damage path 100 yards wide, destroying five homes and damaging three others and the Rice public school complex. Classes in Rice have been canceled for the week.
The weather service says the Lone Oak tornado damaged 10 homes along a 200-yard damage path 50 yards wide.
