City of Bryan Warning About Stealing Electricity

The Bryan Fire Department and BTU are dealing with people getting electricity illegally.

Firefighters were sent Sunday night to a call on Woodville Road of a four-plex on fire.

William Bouse of the fire marshall’s office says instead of a fire, they found a household electrical cord connecting two units.

Bouse says the good samaritan supplying the power was disconnected Sunday night. Service was restored on Monday. The recipient was told to establish service with BTU.

Bouse says the occupants of the two remaining units were not made aware of what he considered a dangerous arrangement.

Bouse compared it to “overloading Christmas lights on steroids” when a household extension cord is used to connect an air conditioner, refrigerator, and other devices.

While that case reportedly involved a good samaritan, Bouse says they are also investigating reports of people plugging into outlets of vacant structures that still have service.

William Bouse visits with WTAW’s Bill Oliver.
